Lake Gaston Drought Update: November 2026 Water Levels, LGA Warning, and What Boat Owners Should Know
Published: November 6, 2026
Information Reviewed: November 6, 2026

Lake Gaston homeowners, boat owners, and visitors should be paying close attention to water levels as ongoing drought conditions continue to affect the Roanoke River Basin.
The Lake Gaston Association (LGA) has shared important information about potential declines in lake elevation, including a warning that Lake Gaston could drop to approximately 197 feet above sea level, or roughly 3 feet below its normal full-pool elevation of 200 feet, if drought conditions continue.
For homeowners who keep boats, pontoons, or personal watercraft at their docks, this could create challenges as we move further into November and December 2026.
However, it is important to distinguish between what has already happened and what officials are warning could happen.
As of November 6, 2026, Lake Gaston has not dropped to 197 feet. That figure represents a possible future scenario discussed in the LGA President's letter, not a confirmed current lake elevation.
Here's what Lake Gaston residents should know.
November 6, 2026: What Are Lake Gaston's Current Water Levels?
According to Dominion Energy's published operational forecast for November 6, 2026, Lake Gaston is operating under drought conditions.
Dominion's anticipated water elevations are:
| Date | Anticipated Lake Elevation |
|---|---|
| November 5, 2026 | 199.29–199.44 feet |
| November 6, 2026 | 199.38–199.50 feet |
| November 7, 2026 | 199.20–199.50 feet |
These measurements are in feet above mean sea level, and the numbers are operational estimates rather than guaranteed readings.
Lake Gaston's normal full-pool elevation is approximately 200 feet above sea level.
While current projected levels are only moderately below that elevation, continued drought and reduced upstream water availability could affect future conditions.

What Did the Lake Gaston Association Announce?
In an undated letter titled Your LGA President's Letter of Drought Measures and Concerns Announcement, LGA President Scooter Boham discussed ongoing monitoring efforts involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Dominion Energy, state agencies, and regional officials.
The letter describes the challenges of balancing water conservation, hydroelectric operations, downstream river-flow requirements, and reservoir storage.
At the time the letter was prepared, Kerr Lake was reported to be approximately 287.8 feet above sea level.
The letter warns that Kerr Lake could decline toward approximately 284 feet if drought conditions continue through November and into December.
It also raises concerns that Lake Gaston could fall to approximately 197 feet, creating additional challenges for residents who use their docks and boathouses.
An important clarification about the dates: The LGA published a separate drought awareness announcement on August 29, 2026. The President's letter discussed here refers to conditions approaching November and December, but its exact original publication date has not been independently confirmed.
These warnings should be viewed as conditional scenarios based on the drought situation, not guaranteed forecasts.
The LGA's announcements can be found through the Lake Gaston Association website.
Why Could Lake Gaston's Water Level Continue to Drop?
One of the most important things to understand about Lake Gaston is that its water levels are affected by much more than rainfall directly over the lake.
Lake Gaston sits downstream from John H. Kerr Reservoir, also commonly called Kerr Lake or Buggs Island Lake.
Water released from Kerr flows into the downstream reservoir system, ultimately supporting Lake Gaston, Roanoke Rapids Lake, and the lower Roanoke River.
During extended drought conditions, the amount of water available upstream becomes especially important.
The LGA letter explains that officials have been reducing flows from Kerr while also maintaining required water releases farther downstream.
According to the letter, the minimum required release from Roanoke Rapids Dam during October and November is 1,500 cubic feet per second (CFS).
The challenge is that water flowing into Lake Gaston must help offset water discharged downstream, as well as losses associated with evaporation, water withdrawals, and other factors.
When those amounts do not balance, stored water may need to be used, causing lake elevations to fall.
This is why water levels can change even when individual communities around Lake Gaston receive some rainfall.
Drought Conditions Across North Carolina in November 2026
The concerns raised by the LGA are consistent with broader drought conditions being reported across the region.
On November 5, 2026, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality issued an update describing worsening drought conditions across portions of central and eastern North Carolina.
The agency reported that many areas east of Interstate 85 experienced one of their five driest August-through-October periods on record.
It also reported that, as of November 2, 2026, John H. Kerr Reservoir was approximately 9.7 feet below normal.
That matters for Lake Gaston because Kerr Reservoir is an important source of upstream water.
Continued dry weather could limit how quickly reservoir storage recovers.

What Does a Possible Drop to 197 Feet Mean for Lake Gaston Boat Owners?
For many waterfront homeowners, the biggest concern is not simply the lake's reported elevation. It is how that change affects everyday access to the water.
A decline of 2 or 3 feet can make a noticeable difference around docks, especially in shallow coves.
Boat lifts and boathouses
If the water gets too shallow beneath a boat lift, homeowners may have difficulty lowering or removing their boat.
Boats with deeper drafts may be especially affected.
Shallow-water coves
Some waterfront properties have excellent water depth, while others depend on a relatively narrow or shallow route to reach the main channel.
Lower lake levels can make these routes more difficult to navigate.
Winter boat storage
In its letter, LGA leadership encourages vessel owners considering winter storage, maintenance, or removal to act sooner rather than later.
If you're already planning to remove your boat or jet ski for the winter, checking your dock's current depth and arranging removal early may help avoid complications.
Exposed underwater hazards
As water levels fall, rocks, stumps, and other obstructions may become more difficult to navigate safely.
Boaters should use caution, especially in areas where they are unfamiliar with the underwater terrain.

Should Lake Gaston Homeowners Be Concerned About Their Property?
Lower lake levels can be frustrating for waterfront homeowners, especially those who purchased their properties specifically for boating access.
However, a temporary decline in water elevation does not automatically mean that a waterfront property has lost value.
Waterfront real estate is influenced by numerous factors, including location, views, shoreline conditions, dock functionality, lot characteristics, and access to navigable water.
Some Lake Gaston homes have deep-water access even during lower-than-normal water conditions. Others may experience noticeable limitations when lake elevations decline.
For buyers, this is another reminder that water depth should be evaluated at the dock and along the route to deeper water, not simply from listing photographs.
For sellers, providing accurate information about water depth, dock access, and seasonal conditions can help potential buyers better understand the property.

What Should Lake Gaston Homeowners Do Right Now?
As of November 6, 2026, the most practical approach is to stay informed and prepare for the possibility of additional declines.
Homeowners should consider the following:
-
Check your boat's clearance. Evaluate water depth beneath your lift, around your dock, and along the route to deeper water.
-
Plan ahead for winter storage. If you're removing a boat or personal watercraft this season, consider scheduling it before water levels potentially fall further.
-
Monitor official updates. Dominion Energy publishes anticipated Lake Gaston water levels and operational conditions.
-
Use caution when boating. Lower elevations may expose hazards or make familiar routes less navigable.
-
Follow local conservation guidance. Water-use restrictions vary by locality and water supplier, so check the requirements for your specific property.
These precautions are particularly relevant during November and December 2026 while drought conditions remain a concern.
Will Lake Gaston Actually Drop to 197 Feet?
There is no guarantee that Lake Gaston will reach 197 feet.
That figure was identified as a potential scenario in the LGA President's letter if drought conditions persist and reservoir operations require additional stored water.
Future lake elevations will depend on several factors, including rainfall across the Roanoke River Basin, inflows into Kerr Reservoir, downstream releases, evaporation, and operational requirements.
Substantial rainfall and improving upstream storage conditions could change the outlook.
For that reason, residents should distinguish long-term drought projections from daily operating forecasts.
The most reliable approach is to continue monitoring Dominion Energy's official water-level information rather than assuming a particular decline is inevitable.
